I don't get a lot of the extreme pro-ai people that don't see issues with using other peoples work without permission. I mean I get that it is "just digital work" (no real/physical theft) but there is still is the substitution effect that damages the original creator(s). Nightshade (and any other technology that will be developed that does something similiar) is necessary.
I'm a writer and so are most of my friends in some capacity (some miniature painters among them as well). The only use we found for AI images so far is background art for our rpg sessions. Why? Because we like to use background images to set the mood and help with narration. Sometimes it's very hard to find fitting art for specific scenes. AI helps with that tremendously. BUT. The images are just "good enough". The suck at closer inspection but since they are only mood pieces that are nice to have we simply don't care. if the group lasts and we are invested enough we still commission artists for important stuff (like character portraits). And that won't change even with AI. If you get too specific in your descriptions the AI just stops producing anything usable. Especially if things get weird.
So far I found generative ai good enough for things with extremely basic requirements. For images it can help to set up a first impression, set the mood. And after that we have a laugh about how some chairs are floating in the air or the dog is the prime evil because if you look closer it has some very unholy mutations. But using it in serious professional work? For now and the forseeable future I don't see it. At least not for images (video and code as well). And I think all those companies that try to push it and are replacing their skilled workers with AI will have a rude awakening when everything falls apart faster than the tech companies can develop their AIs.
So while I'm all against using working without permission and blindly trusting the AI it has it's niche uses. I honestly don't think that the way we use it damages the art community or the bottom line of anybody. The images we use are nice to have filler pieces that we could do without any time. We don't substitute.
Oh... And we do the meme shit. Just not with lamas. but with snails. Don't ask please and I won't say that we are all 30+. ^^'
