It’d great to have sources here. (Doco makers - that's what title cards are for!)
Design aside, this presentation seems to spend a lot of attentional bandwidth when it comes to crimes against the identity of the middle-class consumer? Shrug - get yourselves a better identity than shopping. When that's done – engage - trust and defend your constitutions and privacy laws where they exist. If they don’t exist, then truly google is your friend.
Now when it comes to crimes against marginalized citizens, the Uighurs (East Turkestan) that's a different matter, but you can be damn sure that there would be a justifiable argument for the use of facial recognition coming from those who are doing it. The problem is - who dares cast the first stone? When IBM do it (https://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/SS88XH_2.0.0/iva/attribute_detectors_ranked_search.html) then all that tech and R&D and investment can all fly under the radar, for country and profit, but when the Chinese government do it, suddenly we don't like it? The wider problem is identity through ideology and is always that. Being entranced by the glittering promise of knowing (something, anything!) is like becoming amazed at one side of your hand, while being simultaneously disgusted at the other. Power is power, control is control. Throughout history, we like it when we do it, dislike it when they do it.
Re: Facebook’s emotion experiment (Experimental evidence of massive-scale emotional contagion through social networks Adam D. I. Kramer, Jamie E. Guillory, and Jeffrey T. Hancock PNAS June 17, 2014 111 (24) 8788-8790; first published June 2, 2014 https://doi.org/10.1073/pnas.1320040111), it extends existing work in group control and contagion, and is hardly news to Madison Avenue or Fleet Street. It’s just that there’s a new kid in town. The results of the study show that “observation of others’ positive experiences constitutes a positive experience for people.” Okay, so we’re in the realm of “d’oh”, backed by statistics and a double-blind study. So, if we swim away from the lure of scientism and the detritus of melodrama, does this not merely mean that we’re again in the realm of virtue, neighbourliness, values, justice, and stoicism? Marcus Aurelius was not hypnotized by his power. Be like him.
The Kramer et al publication describes a mechanism of power, like a sword, and outlines a potential to influence – okay, so we’re not going to be able to put that Genie back in the bottle. So then what? Do we demand our CEO’s prove thoroughgoing routine goodwill? No, because “corporate citizens”, no because “stockholders”, no because Neitzsche - who proclaimed the death of God. He said we wouldn’t be prepared for the results, and here he is, being proved right again. After all of those religiously constructed orders of social adhesion, routine and ritual were eroded and re-inscribed into silent networks of anonymized power, we end up as individuals, not groups. And now, can’t we see the hypocrisy of asking for good citizens when the whole value and foundation of “we the people” has been summarily tuned to “you, the audience”. That horse is dead. Whipping it won’t help.
