I haven't chosen a position on this yet, as I'm still learning. What I find interesting is, there's no copyright in the fashion industry. Who owns the right to the shirt or pants? Add a hole here, remove a button there, change the color, logo and it becomes a bran new style. A chair is just a place you put your butt on, nobody owns the idea of a chair and everyone's chair design is just a few small iterations from another person's chair design. The Millennium Falcon and the Star Destroyer and other vehicles were kit-bashed together using model kits from cars and tanks and planes and submarines, there were designers behind each piece of hardware, did they credit any of the original designers or send them a check? Hip Hop is full of sampling, sometimes beats and melodies, sometime entire bars of lyrics, where's the line between plagiarism and an homage? -Do you own the color palette of your image? If I had the same idea and made the same image with the opposite palette, am I copying you? -How much do you give back to the artists who inspired you, that you copied from to become the artist that you are today? -Artist friends of mine that are going hard on this Anti-A.I. trend are the same ones who drew fan art and sold them at Comic book conventions. I don't remember them cutting a royalty check to Square Enix for their Final Fantasy paintings, or HBO and George R.R. Martin for the Game of Thrones paintings, or Akira Toriyama for their Dragon Ball Z paintings. So it's okay to put your own small style tweaks on someone else's IP without their consent into a painting and sell them as your own, but not okay for an A.I. to sample your palette, line thickness, design, composition without your consent and make something brand new out of it? I get the debate and the upset comes from not wanting A.I. dev's to scrape copyright artworks to build their datasets, but at the same time, if your painting of Darth Vader is being used for A.I. training without your consent, can you be upset about it considering it's based on someone else's design and does the original holder of the IP also have the right to be upset at you? If my child is capable of learning by observing and copying and experimenting purely based on information he sees with his eyes, is my A.I. allowed to do the same thing? I have folders with artwork from my favorite artists on my computer, I call it inspiration but isn't that the same as a dataset for my brain? There doesn't seem to be a well defined line. Feel free to enlighten me on this.
