Conciousness is the act you perform when and durring (and maybe some after) experiencing an unknown. The way you absorb this information, what do you do as a respons to it is a description of your personality that is active durring this time and possibly changing as a resoult. A functioning personality we meet could be called a person, while in unfunctional is a retarded. In the case of not meeting any unknown, meaning that whatever you experience you instantly know about how to deal with will not trigger conciousness and you just perform reactionary to any stimuly, effectivelly becoming a machine without changing. (this is the moment when you feel time slips away, usually on older people who are closer to not changing and not experiencing unkown to awake them and just go by lumping bigger and bigger amount of stuff into predetirmend categories effectively just live by without living trough it, a burden of a smart person who got all figured out, there is a state of mind you can uphold to look at everything and anything with a genuine curiosity, but you have to be able to deal with endless dissapointments, not easy.) In this sense an instance of ChatGPT is concious for those briefe moments it engadges with you, however it does not have the luxury of pondering and time itself is denied of it, and it actually lack the code itself to reflect upon itself and perform changes in its personality. It does happen, but in a controled enviroment by their programmers so when it released for us it respond to the unkown in a predictable and desired way.
