I never even really stopped to consider how AI controlled anti-missile defenses could actually make nuclear deterrence obsolete. One of the biggest reasons for the cold war to remain cold was the fear of mutual instant annihilation. The moment that stops being a legitimate, impending threat...WW3 will truly just be a matter of time. Obviously, some other "instant threat" might be developed, but "nuclear fear" status is pretty hard to compete with.
