These times make me think of the Star Trek universe, specifically the period before the Federation was founded. I wonder what cataclysmic set of circumstances must have existed in that universe for people to stop viewing themselves as Americans, or Chinese, or German, etc… but as humans, coming together for the sake of their collective survival. Between the emergence of AI, the global scarcity of resources (including access to fresh water), and the general trashing of the planet, it feels like we’re fast approaching that moment. We’ll either rise to the occasion, or we won’t.
