One real problem in US AI research is that companies are pushing deregulation to maintain pace of advancement with China. China is producing way more AI graduates and PhDs than the US or Europe, and producing way more papers.
And they have firm regulations, and a system to ensure AI training is integrated into the school system from a young age, with approved textbooks and training as a normal part of schooling
