Surveillance is a loaded word. Our smartphones that monitor everything we do is also a surveillance system. With AI and smart door bell and thermostat, tech companies also know when we are home and probably which room you are in. In China, on top of all that, the government is monitoring you in public space too. In principle, the government can demand tech companies streaming them users data and still have a very good idea what are you doing milliseconds by milliseconds. So, what’s the fuzz? And why the Chinese government want you to know they are watching you? Is the smartphone system we have that much better? It’s likely a Yes because of privacy laws. For a country that’s doesn’t have much privacy culture, privacy may not be treated as important as laws against theft or jaywalking, thus no laws guarding privacy? Could this be a cultural issue? If so, people in China may not find surveillance an intrusion but rather a protection shield for them. It’s all our mind (brain), could it be. Those who are raised in the west that values privacy will always find it a surveillance system, those who are raised in China may think otherwise.
