I’ve been getting into AI generation for the past half a year, so here’s my two cents. I can agree with you that AI prompters are not artists, at least the majority aren’t. I’m not an artist, but my ADHD made me try many artistic disciplines over the years. I think I can even say that I became somewhat mediocre at a few of them, but I never stuck around long enough to master anything. Can anyone like that actually call themselves an artist? Not in my opinion. A more accurate title would be AI director. Does a movie director wake up at 4am to head down to the makeup department to help get actors ready? Do they write the majority of the script of their movie? Do they spend countless hours helping the CGI department by getting down and dirty and animating scenes themselves? No, they don’t. They are not the artists that work under them, but they do have to understand those artists, their work, and what they are capable of. The director is the person with the vision. They delegate all the work needed to bring their vision to reality. And for that, they get to slap their name on the movie. Do we say that movie or tv show directors don’t deserve credit for the shows they helped bring to the screen, simply because they didn’t do the majority of the hard labor? Now, are there people who will do the bare minimum to generate an image or video? Of course there is. Just like there are actual show or movie directors who also do the bare minimum. But we don’t remember those directors; we only remember the ones who worked tirelessly to perfect the craft of putting their vision on the screen.
