I spent a grand total of 34 hours last week drawing tarot cards for the lead actors in a theater production I was just a part of. Could AI have done it faster? Yeah. Would it have saved me the mental stress I was under? Absolutely. Would it have done a better job? Probably. Would AI have been able to replicate every little detail? The two freckles on our lead actor’s neck? The earrings our lead actress had chosen specifically for her role? Would AI have thought to add holy symbolism to one actress, or would AI know enough about the show to have one actor wield lightning? Would it add colorful highlights to their eyes to symbolize their connections to their characters? No. I personalized each card to our actors with my knowledge of who they are as people, what they love, what their characters were like. AI doesn’t have the foresight to even consider how to pose each character, what to add to each scene or what to make the border look like to fit the style of the show. Sure, AI could do it better. But what it can’t do is show the genuine human emotion and passion that I can. I showed my drawings to the cast of that show, and you know what they did? They cried, hugged me, thanked me for putting so much effort into eight little cards. I’m going to print off each one for them. If I went to them that night and said, “I AI-generated tarot cards for you guys!” They would NOT have reacted half as kindly. I don’t even know these people well. I’ll probably never speak to them outside of the theater. But I did it anyways, because I *wanted* to. AI bros don’t understand that - a lot of artists make art just for the hell of it. We love the feeling of drawing and being able to make something. You can’t ever replicate that feeling with AI.
