There’s no way his numbers on unemployment can be right.
White collar jobs are going to be under risk. But that’s only a fraction of all the jobs out there. You have the entire service sector, healthcare, skilled trades, education and childcare, and hospitality that are largely untouchable by AI. While a lot of them can be helped or augmented by AI, you still need nurses to administer needles and teachers to supervise and instruct a class.
There’s no way in hell all those sectors make up only 0.1%. Not to mention many of them are often in government run industries in most parts of the industrialized world. Since they aren’t normally private sector jobs, their wages are paid by governments, who can collect a percentage of profits even from big corporations like Microsoft/openAI.
I mean, early childcare alone employs about 1% of the entire US population, with early child care and education boosting that number to 5%. Healthcare, skilled trades and hospitality are around 10% each. Thats 35% of jobs that are nearly impossible to automate.
You need people to run the AI (generate prompts and interpret results). So even in industries that are highly tech and data driven, you won’t see 99.9% layoffs. AI improvements are slowing due to regulations around information scraping and the scale of additional training material required for big improvements.
I highly doubt we’ll see more than a 30-40% unimportant rate, if even that much.
