In my opinion, sentient is basically saying you can do new things by yourself, always improving but always haveing the emotions that can make someone have a screw loose.
Kinda like how we're complex like a gasoline engine, thus break down and jave more problems when something like a Bee is an electric motor, they rarelt have issues, and when they do it's rapidly taken care of.
Useing this as a base, AI could take these 2 ways, being complex and while not technically human, there essentially are one, or be the simple hive mind electric motor that while has no problems, lacks that what makes life worth living, putting them more in the 'sub sentient' section.
Or there might be a organic and mechine form of classification, a base like that would make things easier.
