Thanks for watching and raising these excellent points. You are absolutely right that this video doesn't address the huge structural issues that surround mass incarceration in this country. That deserves many feature documentaries (and there are some great ones out already - like Ava DuVernay's "13th", or Kelly De La Vega and Katie Galloway's film "The Return" about lifers getting out in California) that peel back the layers of a system that is designed to self-perpetuate. BUT, that said, we feel it's important to understand the mechanics of how the current system actually works. We chose to focus on the algorithm aspect for the video because that is gaining a lot of traction as a criminal justice reform effort throughout the U.S., and many critics are concerned about it for the reasons you mention above. It's certainly not a panacea for the problems of racial inequity, unfair sentencing, and the whole prison-industrial complex. But we think it's valuable for viewers to learn about how decisions get made around things like parole, and the pros and cons that come with replacing human judgment with data-driven decisions. Our series is less about providing "definitive" explanations of complex phenomena, and more about raising critical questions. We are hoping to inspire commentary, further inquiry and just the kind of analysis you provided here. (And we plan to do a whole series of videos that explore different aspects of the justice system, so keep watching!)
