It doesn't have to be conscious or even "intelligent" in some human sense. We could say Stockfish doesn't "really" play chess, I mean it doesn't even know what chess is. It still beats the strongest human players. Chess is a narrow task so no matter how "smart" Stockfish gets in its domain, there is no risk of misaligned superintelligence. But LLMs show glimpses of "world knowledge" and "general intelligence". Philosophers can worry about the "do submarines swim?" question but in practice the question is meaningless if we ever get to a point where a program checkmates the entire human race.
