Anyone with a good understanding of how neurons work and how transistors work know that a truly capable autonomous car without lidar is basically impossible. You can get good enough, but neurons and logic gates are fundamentally different in how they process information.
Neuron clusters are evolved to handle tons of pattern recognition as quickly and efficiently as possible. Neurons have some really unique gate setups that are basically impossible to achieve on a 2d circuit board.
Transistors were first and foremost designed for math, constant sensor checking, and calculations. Even the most rudimentary computers with a couple hundred thousand transistors could easily out number crunch a hundred trained people.
You can't just take one and brunt force it to be good at something it wasn't designed to be good at. You need crutches to help bridge the gap. Lidar can function as that crutch for autonomous vehicles in the same way a slide rule and a multiplication table can be a crutch for a person doing math.
