Developing and researching A.I. will, in fact, help us understand the human consciousness (and solve the mind-body problem in philosophy) – that I would say is a safe bet. Of course, some will get rich in a process (few – quite literally, and most of the rest – experientially). It is a kind of technology never seen before. And it is remarkably similar to human reasoning (in a more lax definition of the word). Needless to say, among 335 million people you’ll find some “100% die-hard academic researchers”, some “let’s move fast and break things” hard-core libertarian opportunists, some “free-spirited, ‘love all people’ artists”, ad hoc believers, ad hoc deniers, neo-Nazis and, finally, good-old politicians (those pre-trained but also those “self-developed”, like an art of the deal)… What can I say: Given a fair, wide and voluminous sample, statistics runs supreme… Word of advice, Sabine (a rule of thumb): Never trust people who can neither sing nor dance (longer than the duration of a TikTok video); their smile may be a fake… (So, you’re a Depeche Mode fan, aye?) The thing is, there are benevolent believers and, then, there are those more down-to-earth “pragmatic” and aggressive; that’s in the “quality” column. And the “quantity” inline column begins to frighten me these days. That’s how societies slip from “free form” to “mechanistic, monolithic”. That mentioned article in the New York Times is fine – as far as investigative journalism goes. But, that story about an exception (in behavior) should not be construed as a rule. After all, we’ve been familiar with religious fanatics and sects for as long as I have lived… Some were benevolent (to the society in large) and some were quite malevolent and destructive. And, sometimes, the latter group even manages to grab the levers of power in a society. Pure evil, the Machiavellian kind. And people still have doubts… So, what is more sober question than this one (i.e. will A.I. make some people crazy) is: How massive is the messianic delusional neurosis on the far right? On a brighter (and more informative) side – and speaking of newspaper articles on the subject – check the recent story “Scientist Use A.I. To Mimic the Mind, Warts and All” in the same paper… BTW, nice report on the progress in the “string theory landscape”; I loved it! (So, you’re a metrologist, I gather…) Now, I’m going back to hibernation (where I can dream of benevolent electric sheep, poetically speaking)… Wake me up before … the turn of the 25th century. One more thing (a suggestion)… If you haven’t already (or recently) done so, watch a movie (a spectacle and a masterpiece), “a period drama” from medieval England (and France) – and about human nature just as much – from the 2010 and from my (I dare say) favorite film director, starring Russell Crowe, Cate Blanchett and Max von Sydow (along many others); what a brilliant, multi-layered work!
