Firstly, speaking in generalities allows room for there to always be exceptions to the statement.
That said, ART is a concept. It is NOT one skill. The same way that being an engineer, Hunter, actor, or police officer is not one skill. It is a compilation of many skills used together. Manual dexterity, hand eye coordination, abs a myriad of internal process to evolve from the Genesis of an "artistic" idea, through conceptualization, actualization, and application. (This is often referred to as the "artistic process", and can be highly variable in nature).
Many people have cited 'drive', 'want', 'desire', or 'passion' as their agency. Let's call it motivation. Many people have cited developing "skill" in art, as stated above, this is really many skills working together. Physical limitation is a real thing, (fiber myalgia was mentioned in the video) but even something as simple as strength or color-blindness. Access to time, medium, and support can play huge roles in the development process.... But here's the kicker... TALENT. yes, I said it. Talent is a real thing. But it is often misperceived or misunderstood. If you think of it as the game that many do, with stat points, talent is not starting with more, it's the natural inclination a person has to make it easier to level up a skill. The truth is that talent does out-shine skill... But only at the very beginning, and (in theory) the very top end. And this applies to all things, not just art. Sports, knowledge, pickup lines, anything. The entire rest of the skill climb, the mid-range, is entirely about where you are developmentally. People with "talent" will be seen as having an easier time advancing in skill... Because they do. Now hold your pitchforks, this also comes with its own set of pitfalls. A great example being "gifted child syndrome" (it's not a disease), where in children that are 'gifted' in school seem to have an easy time, and appear to be set for life by their quick access start. Some times that happens. More often, as researchers are finding, these people tend to struggle with success in life because the did not struggle in school, and so must develop resilience and percussive much later in life.
Which brings me to the crux of this debate. Struggle vs ease. Success vs criticism. And entitlement vs earned reward.
Some who "can't" art (yes I used art as a verb, get over it English teachers) are overwhelmed with the seemingly insurmountable task of training "all the skills", which said their motivation, proving that they lack the motivation to achieve the results at the far end of a task they set themselves up to fail at, without realizing it. This is generally the self sabotage cited in this video, and preyed on by the perveyors of a reward made easy. In this case the reward is the ability to create art by letting AI do the heavy lifting.
Some folks are willing to try, but get easily discouraged when their attempts aren't good (enough for their standards). They set unrealistic expectations for themselves and allow early struggle and development to seem like failure because objectively, the quality is not there. (This is me by the way). Some people thrive on the "reality" that their budding works aren't very good. It fuels their desire to improve. I'm not talking about these people. I'm talking about the people who (again) self sabotage, by using objectivity to say "is just not good" meaning: even though I just started this thing, I'm disappointed in the product and don't want to feel like a failure. These people are more easily wounded by criticism than they seem, and frequently reject praise as insincere (probably related to much bigger things than art). And for these people, navigating the process to allow themselves to grow can be a tricky business (again, I would know), which is why I want to say thank you for this video. I'm sure it won't be present for everyone, but it fits nicely in a space that is both encouraging and sincere.
The last group I mentioned are the praise seeking, entitled people. I'm not going to dive this one, because it's a deep pit... But for these people, they are not really after the art, they are after the recognition. If the argument is made that they "deserve" to make art so the world can know... For these people, AI is the easy path to a cash grab, and you won't argue them down. They don't really care about making the art. AI is easier than developing skills they don't want to invest in, so that's the side they will take.
