How I’d go about trying to discover consciousness: First, we’d learn how to communicate with a different intelligent species. Namely Orca Whales, Sperm Whales, Crows, Octopuses, or Elephants. Any species we choose will be an entire problem and a puzzle to figure out, but once we get to a point where we have basic understanding that we’re mutually trying to communicate the process might become easier. Once we learn how to converse on not only physical and mental aspects such as “I feel sad about x” but also reasoning, things will progress faster. Creating a language together is also a really good way so that it’s mutual and not just one sided, they put concepts into the language and we do the same. All of this will be done so we can figure out just how biased our idea of consciousness IS and get a perspective from a being that isn’t human. We only think we’re the only conscious beings because we can’t actually relate, communicate or understand the motivations of other species, and no amount of just face value study will get us any closer. We need to go deeper. Every year we learn just how much more intelligent other species are than we previously thought, or we think only WE can do this one thing only for a different species to do the same thing. Either way, this is one way of understanding consciousness, as well as I think- giving us a larger understanding of empathy. Orca whales apparently have a larger and more complex lobe in their brain responsible for social and empathetic reasoning compared to humans, they literally have such a complex and more vast idea of empathy than humans could ever even conceive… and yet we can’t communicate with them. It’s my firm belief that there’s nothing that we cannot learn. It takes a lot of mental power and lots of plotting out, meaning if we could communicate with them it’d be like doing rocket science for every conversation- but I think it’d still be possible. And not only that but it’d teach us how to handle conversation with AI in testing whether or not it’s being genuine. Here’s also another thing, we’re so biased that we don’t even fully understand other humans. We can have ways to, but it requires intimacy. Communication is a really big way of doing that, how do I know how something is conscious? They tell me physically and verbally. Now you can ask how they VIEW their consciousness. We’re at the point of only being able to see the physical reactions of how certain species interact as well as basic calls, but we don’t have all the tools to really understand the complexity of how they teach each other. Once we understand the ways they learn and teach, then we can pretty much get anywhere.
