There has not been a time in history when more efficient processes has not changed the work force. Starting fires before matches, paper pushers before computers, factory labor before assembly lines, engineers before CAD/CAM. If a companyA is going to compete, they will accomplish a task in most cost effective way available or the companyB down the road will and companyA will no longer exist. Simply arguing that people need their jobs will fail. This is coming from an engineer who has seen a lot of more efficient processes take over. Mostly in the name of getting way more done with the same people. With AI, the cycle begins again. Move more freight with the same people or move the same freight with less.
The safety argument may have some teeth but know that self driving machines are very good. My own Tesla does 95% of my around town driving and is quickly getting to where is can do better than I can. It’s coming and it is very good. Austin now has Waymo and Tesla robotaxis. Go take a ride. A useful argument is liability. Who is insuring them? My can will have a licensed driver in the drivers seat until an insurance company will insure it without a driver. Keep in mind once they believe it’s safer without a driver, it will be cheaper if I’m not in that seat.
