This definitely needs to be discussed - and I appreciate Sam's courage, in the face of internet trolls and people who do not fathom the terrible implications of this. Biggest point I see: Is that the music industry has already put their foot down about using copyrighted material for the generation of AI music. Why then, is it such a drag (to people who aren't even in the visual art spectrum, no less) that artists demand the same. Good god, it's not like visual artists haven't taken enough of a beating as it is, with the induction of CG media. The massive decline of the mediums that were once used to portray art in literally most media formats has already taken it's toll on the industry. But we, as artists, adapt and chase our visions regardless. However, this situation is a bit more startling - as it is literally going head-to-head with the most effective forgery 'artists' ever created on planet earth and there is apparently a large proportion of people that thinks that is perfectly fine and reasonable. Here's what I personally will do - I'm going all-out into traditional oil. And I'll have to rely on the selling of original art, rather than establishing a large online presence, for the time being. We need to stand together on this topic, because it's apparent not a lot of others will assist in the creation of a protocol, that would be adopted by AI companies and respect our intellectual properties. Edit: I think that there has always been a lean towards music property being more protected in such cases as described in the video. The outlash against Napster, Limewire etc. occurred at a time when many predicted the end for musicians of all kinds to be able to have that career. Visual art, especially in America, has been deemed as an almost unnecessary industry, as opposed to music. But there are still a lot of regular people that appreciate original art. I think the resurgence of original art is the best course of action for many of us - at least until a painting robot is developed, that can masterfully reproduce the works of humanity's greatest artists on canvas flawlessly.
