It'll be interesting to see where this goes, what with lawsuits going on and the like. Personally, I feel the biggest issues are the lack of consent (I believe there should be opt-in) and obviously, the ability to make money off artists' work. Now, someone might disagree with me on that, or on whether artists' work is being stolen. I don't know enough about that to have a long-winded debate with someone on the Internet. I personally believe there isn't enough of a difference to make it okay, whether or not it's legal. Tracing has been looked down on in the past, and this feels a little bit like that to me. There isn't construction happening, with an understanding of 3D space, physics and the human body. My understanding is that there are some 'rules' about what 'looks okay', and that's what the AI uses. There are essentially slight changes to the artwork, but overall, it's pretty much a copycat of the original, and that's not great? Especially if you're going to sell it. We'll see what the big guys say, I suppose. I might be right, I might be wrong, my thoughts on the matter might change over time. But I hope the discussions that are happening, and that the lawsuit against Stable Diffusion leads to good things.
