“Born with a gift” I have drawn every single day since I was about 3 years old. My parents could not afford classes, they could not afford books to teach me. I did not have a computer or phone until I got to college so I could not watch tutorials. I progressed these skills by obsessively observing reality: observing the characteristics of different materials and how light cascades, how light and shadow suggest mass. I watched and replicated these things day after day, failing over and over until I got it right (a decade or more later). When I was in high school and hit a wall with the female form I stole a figure drawing book from a barnes and noble, to this day it is the only art book I have read. I never learned the basics, I never learned hacks or tips, I don’t pre-sketch or draw proportions or guidelines before I start the drawing, I work in ink, never pencil, and I never mess up because I spent 20 years messing up every single day to get here. I brute forced it for 8,000 days and now it’s second nature. It was the most rewarding undertaking in my life, and will remain so until I die. It took me 15 years to get the human face right, 11 years to get clothing right, 20 years to get landscapes right, 20 years to get perspective and architecture right — tell me how in the world you could call 20 years of failure talent? It probably took me longer to learn how to draw than most people, but I can still draw because I committed to it for 8000 days, talent not necessary
I am indeed better than people who use AI to fake art — who are too lazy to commit to something and take shortcuts instead. I am much, much better than them, but it’s not because of anything I was born with and I certainly bleed red
