After Uber Self-Driving Fatality -- What Now you ask? We push even more for self-driving vehicles! There was a human driver in this self driving car. He wasn't able to avoid the accident either. So how can we blame the car?
There's a saying that says "Nothing is foolproof for a sufficiently talented fool" That is, and always will be the case. If someone is foolish enough to practically jump in front of a car, in a situation where BOTH the human and AI drivers were unable to avoid a collision, then they'll get hit. Simple as that. No amount of AI and tech will ever solve this problem.
It's sad someone died. But she would have died regardless of who was behind the wheel. What would be even sadder is for this incident to delay millions of lives being saved from a fully automated driving future. I for one can't wait for humans to be banned from driving anywhere else but places that are specially reserved for that recreation sport... just like what happened with horses.
