I strongly support reducing the standard workweek to 32 hours with no loss of pay. Technology, especially AI, automation, and robotics, has already made us vastly more productive. Automation Is Not the Enemy, It Is the Opportunity
The only realistic way to bring manufacturing back to the United States is by embracing automation and robotics. Competing globally on labor cost alone is impossible, but competing on efficiency, innovation, and quality through advanced technology is absolutely possible. Automation does not have to eliminate jobs; it can eliminate drudgery. Machines should take over what is repetitive, dangerous, or physically exhausting, while humans focus on creativity, oversight, and problem solving.
The AI Race Is Real and Relentless
We are already in an AI race, and whichever country leads will shape the global economy, military balance, and even the moral framework of future technology. Slowing down AI is not an option, because others will not stop. Instead, we must lead responsibly by investing heavily in education, research, and ethical AI frameworks. If we step back, someone else will define the rules of this new world, and not necessarily in line with democratic values or human rights.
The 32-Hour Workweek Is the Logical Next Step
If AI and automation can double productivity, then workers should reap the rewards through time, not just corporations through profit. A 32-hour week is not only about leisure, it is about health, family, creativity, and dignity. It means fewer burned-out nurses, teachers, engineers, and factory workers, and more people with energy to raise families, innovate, and live fulfilling lives.
The 40-hour standard was set in 1938 during the industrial age. We are now entering the intelligence age. The measure of progress should no longer be how long we work, but how wisely we distribute the benefits of technology.
My Perspective
AI is not good or bad by itself; it is a tool that amplifies human intent. If our intent is greed, it will deepen inequality. But if our intent is shared prosperity, it can lift everyone.
We stand at a crossroads. Either AI becomes a force that concentrates power in the hands of a few tech giants, or it becomes a force that frees humanity from meaningless labor and allows us to build a society based on creativity, purpose, and compassion.
We cannot and should not stop AI, but we must guide it and use its power to shorten working hours, not human
