I think this is the fundamental difference between AI and previous technological advances. When we invented the mechanised plough, it liberated millions of agricultural workers - whose labour was then available for new and more profitable industries. Farmhands became factory workers, and the industrial revolution saw a transformation of economies in which everyone became staggeringly richer, all because we'd freed up labour which could be put to use elsewhere and which WAS put to use elsewhere. AI just destroys. There's no intent to free people from working low-value jobs so they can move into higher-value jobs and provide more to the economy, just to get them off payroll and into someone else's list of problems. We're at a tipping point where we need to fundamentally rethink concepts of work and value, because while a successful AI transition could eliminate the need for subsistence labour and lead to guaranteed universal basic living standards (because a self-sustaining machine workforce doesn't need capital input), a failed transition could tank the entire economy as spending power evaporates and there's no capital left to prop it up.
