I have worked in manufacturing and it's true, the old timers hobble around with bad hips, knees, back, etc... Not to mention various diseases and maladies from toxins.

Safety measures, reduced working hours, vacations, proper medical care, occupational therapy, protective equipment and yes, automation can all protect workers from these hazards.
