Excellent video! I've been using Midjourney but I have never used any artist's name, contemporary or otherwise, as a style reference because I think it is absolutely non-ethical regardless of the fuzzy issue regarding copyright and the way these models train on copyrighted works. I admit, I'm very conflicted about AI "art" generative models in general. On the one hand, I'm trying to figure out how to make money with this technology because of my own personal situation in life trying to climb out of poverty because of a downturn in my health, but on the other hand I still just don't feel right about AI "art" generation in general.
At the very least, I believe there should immediate protection prohibiting the use of contemporary artists' names being used in prompts, full stop. Second, I absolutely support going forward (because I agree it is impossible at this point to put the genie back in the bottle) the argument you make that the default should be an "opt in" regarding available artists' works for training.
Furthermore, I believe these large tech companies owe compensation to every contemporary artist whose works these generative models have been trained on.
I've been working to develop a process where I only use my own photography, drawings, etc as image references, with generalized styling prompts like "maximalism" etc for generated output. Even though I can't "erase" the bits of memory in stylization that MJ inherently expresses in such output based on its training, it is a step in the direction at least for me, to feel better about the output personally, ethically, and philosophically.
I feel like my position is in the minority among those embracing this technology, but I think there are allies you can find among those of us using this technology who aren't AI "art" maximalists who completely and callously dismiss every concern artists have.
