I’m a hobbyist artist, and most AI art is no better than what I can do. What upsets me is that people who aren’t artists are taking credit for art that was generated by a computer (the actual artist). AI isn’t “like a paintbrush”, it isn’t a tool if you’re just using the raw output of the AI. The AI is the one creating the art. Some schmucks putting 5 words into a search bar and thinking they’re artists? Screw that. It deludes the unartistic into thinking that art theft is acceptable. There are good applications for AI art, and unfortunately those applications are a minority among the many problematic use-cases. When digital art became more accessible in the 2010s, there was an immediate presence of “artists” who more or less used Photoshop to alter existing art to pass it off as their own. Deviantart was like 70% art theft. To this day there are artists on Instagram who’s soul schtick is to take some uncredited photographer’s images of people, blur the shit out of their skin so it looks like a painting, and then redraw the head in a manga aesthetic. The result of that has been that legitimate digital art is called into question, and people who spend days on a piece are treated no differently than someone who ran an image through a photo filter or barely altered someone else’s work. AI art will further depreciate the value of actual human effort, and encourages an attitude toward art that devalues work and effort, and promotes laziness. All for people who are so salty about being shitty at art that they complain about actual artists who don’t want their medium infected.
