As autodriving advances, it WILL reach the point where it outperforms human drivers (and depending on the driver, it will outperform certain drivers a lot sooner than others). But it is not there yet by far, nor does it self-drive yet. It does not yet have a library capable of intuiting every situation that a human driver will likely see a solution to. And it does not yet have the capacity to network with other cars or with the roads that have been designed to do the calculation to calculate the ideal manouvring for all the cars to be as efficient as possible.
Self driving cars SHOULD be worked towards by competent companies. But not rushed through, because then you're playing with lives. And I'm not sure if Tesla should be the company leading or even working towards such a goal.
