For one, it already cost many artists their jobs. It's mostly in China now, but since other economies will have to compete with the Chinese, they will no longer be able to pay artists. Secondly, of course it's stealing. They used any artwork available on the internet to train the AI under the pretense of purely scientific pursuit (which means it's non-profit) and then began selling those AI to people. It's as if a medical study would collect seemingly anonymised data from patients for some study, only to then sell that data to insurance companies. And the last point is, that people prompting the AI have no right to call themselves artists. If they sent their request to a human artist, who made it for them, they also wouldn't call themselves artists. AI is a tool these people don't even understand how it works and these people are users in the classical IT sense of the word. Also, the tool "learns" only to do averages. It doesn't actually think or is creative. It know that the average of what a prompt would produce, it does not add anything, that doesn't already exist. Hence why now the newly trained AI had the problem, that it's referencing other AI generated pictures and suffers a visible loss of quality.
