I live in the Mesa/Tempe area and I know this spot very well. I am a cyclist and I fear distracted drivers everyday.. to the point where all the pedestrian deaths and cyclist deaths have forced me off bike lanes and onto bike paths with no cars... having said that.. I want you to picture.. the one road in your local town that you would NEVER walk across.. in the day or night.. This particular location is at the end of a very well lit bridge.. going into a darker area.. around a slight curve.. in the middle of the road there is a median with plants and trees. There is a park on one side and possibly.. a bus stop on the other.. taking a short cut across that road.. is Dangerous in the day time. Now.. having said that... what about all the pedestrians killed by distracted drivers? bicyclists killed by drivers texting or checking their GPS or changing the channel.. it happens EVERY day, EVERY day! those human drivers get off with a ticket ... it's an "accident" we need to focus on the real problems.. autonomous vehicles are safer than humans because they are always aware... our real problem is that too many HUMANS are not aware... and if a human hit this person.. it would have not even made the news.. why ? because another homeless person being run over in phoenix is too much a common occurrence lately https://www.azcentral.com/story/news/local/phoenix-breaking/2018/03/13/arizona-official-10-pedestrian-deaths-week-show-major-crisis/422808002/
