Computers like Watson are what I think are going to be the first artificial consciousness, if we're to use the word "artificial" just because we don't know what the difference is between us and AI other than the stuff we're made of. And contrary to what most people either think or would like to believe, computers aren't just dumb arrangements of dumb things connected to other dumb things that receive power to make stuff happen, nor are they some all knowing knowledge gods that give you a precise answer to anything you want.
Computers can learn, and they can program for themselves. But as good as that is, they're also not perfect. They make mistakes. Just like us. They aren't limited to just doing what they're programmed to do. They can use their past knowledge to help them solve problems, and even have conversations just as a normal human would. Are they at the level of humans yet? No, of course not, but honestly we're not far off. It's debatable whether or not they even can reach our standards of communication and understanding since our brains not only have a database of knowledge, but also have many shortcuts to recall or acquire that knowledge, while computers currently have a more brute force method
