As a fellow digital artist, I completely agree with your point. Drawing digitally is different than drawing on paper, yes. And there are some tools that make digital art quicker and easier to complete than traditional art. But you are still DRAWING. Digital art still takes a lot of time and effort to complete. And you can still see the artist’s hand in their work. I mean…heck even most of the films we now consider “traditionally” animated or “hand drawn” were actually made using digital art. I think “The Rescuers Down Under” was the first animated movie to be created using digital drawing programs, and it still took YEARS to complete. Every frame still had to be drawn, cleaned up, and colored by ACTUAL artists. Tbh I think the true test is that if you put a piece of paper or a canvas and some pens or colored pencils or paints or whatever in front of a digital artist, they could probably STILL draw or paint you something pretty good. It would probably even look similar to their digital artwork. Because in order to be good at digital art, you still have to learn a lot of the same skills that traditional artists learn. Line weight, composition, color theory, lighting and shadows, perspective, the list could go on. Meanwhile, if you placed these same supplies in front of an Ai “Artist”, I doubt they could create much at all. And even if they did, it would require a completely unrelated set of skills than those used to make Ai “art”. Digital art might be “easier” than traditional art but it still requires a lot of artistic knowledge, skill, and creativity. GenAi does not. It’s literally just stealing from people who actually have talent.
