Let me start by explaining how I come into this. I am an old man. I am also a motorcyclist, for over 40 years. I spent 20 years or so driving taxis. And I have played with computers a little bit. I suspect we are arguing about the number of angels that can dance on the head of a pin. The right thing for a driver to do in a case like that, is brake hard and hope the falling junk does not do too much damage. You do not swerve into another lane if that is likely to involve contact with another vehicle. You may decide to brake less hard if there is another truck behind you, on the basis that it is better to hit a cabinet or a wardrobe, than to be cleaned up by a cement mixer. As a programmer, you are making the assumption the machine understands the difference between a car, in the lane alongside, or a motorcycle, or another truck, or a nun wheeling a pram. I strongly suspect most auto-driving algorithms don't work that way. There are arguments we could have (and should be having) about autonomous control of things like combat drones, about how Bill Gates should handle the question of collateral damage when he can launch a Hellfire at Osama Bin Laden, but Osama is visiting an orphanage... or a Doctors Without Borders medical post. ... The people who are talking about this kind of stuff, do not seem to me to be programmers.
