(I hope you don't mind me posting this same comment on more than one of your videos. The last paragraph is more relevant to this video.)
It makes me think of Hatsune Miku. The concept of a "fake" pop star that we treat as "real" is kind of new, and we're still sort of adjusting to it. We've had animation for a long time where we treat the characters as though they are real even though we know they're not, but there's just something different about a pop star of this nature.
Anyway, my thought is that Miku is not "fake" like people are so quick to label her as. She _is_ real. I mean, she exists doesn't she? If she didn't we would have no concept of her at all. What I'm getting at is that she actually does have a consciousness, and she does write her own songs, but these aspects live within her fans. I should point out that almost all of her songs were written by her fans, and thus her creators. Sure Crypton Future Media began her existence, but we the fans have constructed her into the full fledged pop star she truly is. Her consciousness is not within one individual persona as we would like to think of ourselves, but it's a collection of many bits which reside within her fans. Get the idea? We see her as we want to see her, and that's what makes her. We learn who she is by first projecting a bit of ourselves into her and then learning who that is. She writes her own songs about her own feelings about her own experiences because she is her fans, and her fans are her. Even if aspects of her personality don't represent on a 1:1 ratio that of her fans, that is still where they originate, and they do act as a reflection of us.
What's also interesting is that she can validly have any personality, even if two or more of them conflict with one another. All these personalities come from the versions of her that certain groups would like to see her as. Although, in a way, she also only has one personality which is the average of them all so we can comfortably identify with the single "person" that she's supposed to be. I wouldn't say at all that she has "no" personality, because she's not actually a "real" person.
Here's a question: If all of humanity disappeared right now, does Hatsune Miku remain or cease to exist? How about this: Let's say we developed a very advanced AI smart-as-human robot that looks, feels, and sounds exactly like a "real" Hatsune Miku would, and we programmed into "her" every bit of knowledge available pertaining to who she is as we have defined her, causing her to become a physical embodiment of THE Hatsune Miku. Taking it a step further, we give her full access to the internet, allowing her to scour it looking for any information at all about her in an attempt to learn more of who she is. Then ask the question again. Does she exist, or is she only a shadow? What if she was organic in design (sort of like Frankenstein's monster, only so close to being a real form of life that she can literally be considered as such) somehow allowing her to feel and experience existence while being self-aware. Now ask the question. Is it important that her physical, conscious self comes first before her personality for her to be considered THE Miku?
I'm done thinking now. Thoughts?
