Or maybe consciousness is an illusion and people have rights because at different points in time in different countries, the people who held political power decided and legislated that they should have them; not because sacks of molecules arranged a certain way have rights as an intrinsic quality. Also, maybe let's not make self-improving AI happen. We are currently putting far more thought into how to make it that not kill, enslave, or rise up against us than into how we would actually make it; I think that's a pretty good indicator of when something's a bad idea.
