What it boils down to is that computers already calculate all delivery routes (aka traveling salesman problem) which gives more incentive to see what else can be computerized as well. How this would look like in twenty years is a big question. IMO it's likely to be a gradual process where automated driving systems in your delivery cars take over for the driver while the driver focuses on improving the load out of the package car (believe it or not not all package car loaders are equal when it comes to proper loading for fastest delivery). Or they could let the driver still drive but some drone-like machine delivers the package the last few hundred feet. However they implement this, the core technologies for this exist TODAY. We've been playing with these in graduate schools and research labs for nearly fifteen years and the rate of improvement has exceeded expectations of researchers (just look at anything coming out of MIT's own robotics labs). So it's really a matter of time, not if it will ever happen. I'll say the time table for this looks to be around twenty years with long haul trucking likely to be the first automated within ten years or sooner. The rest is really a question of form factors and insurance company's willingness to insure such vehicles.
