It's in the UK. The face scanning tech is usually in modern security cameras. "Following an unsuccessful court challenge based on human rights concerns, [facial recognition systems will be implemented nationwide](https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/news/uk-news/government-defends-facial-recognition-rollout-33309634)." The government no doubt thinks it will benefit. Especially if stores can share data with government and law quickly and easily. It may also eventually include, as shown in Germany a few years ago, [age checks at self checkouts (face scanning estimation)](https://www.biometricupdate.com/202412/edeka-jaeger-adds-another-automated-store-with-age-verification-germany). It's ironic given Europe (including the UK) has pushed to maintain online privacy with it's GDPR, yet is allowing companies to roll out biometric surveillance. Of course stores will have signs to warn people such tech is being used, but I doubt many will notice until something goes wrong (my other post). All of this surveillance tech fits in quite well with the UN global want for everyone to have identity, which leads to digital ids, part of it's Social Development Goal, SDG 16:9
