The US has always been afraid to fight a symmetrical war, and for good reason: people don't want to die or send their kids to die on behalf of some "allies" or "ideals". We haven't really had to fight to protect our own territory in over 200 years, and it has always taken years of propaganda to convince the American people to get involved in a war that risks significant casualties.
