I've been softly advocating for Software Engineers to be *properly* brought under the fold of real engineering for a while now. With how much absolute abhorrent shit coming out of the AI industry, social media industry, I've put good thought into actually pursuing that as a cause harder.
And it isn't all that much because I want the industry to develop the professional rigor that exists on other engineering disciplines (but yes, I ultimately do want that too) its more about how I really *really* wish there were a governing body willing to take people and companies to task for doing this horrid shit.
I'm a Software Engineer, and I'm licensed by my professional body up in Canada to use the title. As part of that privilege I am expected to adhere to certain professional standards and a code of conduct that puts public and environmental safety ahead of all other needs. If I wrote applications *meant* to harm people I could lose my license, face penalty and all that. Why are we not able to go after people designing these things??! They want the fancy title. They want the lucrative salary. But they want none of the social responsibility. If engineers were out there designing infrastructure with the same level of dark patterns and harm built into the design as software there'd be a reconning.
Yet every time I talk of this in professional circles boooooyyy howdy you should see the vitrol that starts coming my way. Bunch o' script monkeys start lashing out real quick when you start talking about "engineers" being actual professionals.
