Well, let's put this straight. The really rich know something (or more likely plan something themselves). Not every CEO of course, but Bezos and his buddies do. They start wiping the companies basically, then the smaller sharks looks at what they do and start firing people too, then smaller and so it propagates to the smallest companies because 'that's what everyone does'. What can it be? Something that will alter the entire world economy and make such big workforces the thing of the past. So they're doing a logical thing (for them) and fire more and more to save money. What good that money would buy when not rich can't buy anything is another problem and perhaps they didn't even think that far. Possibilities: 1) Dumping of a dollar causing the economic turmoil for years during which all non critical stuff won't sell 2) WWIII 3) Alien contact 4) LLM and robotics making a real impact wiping entire economic sectors 5) A natural catastrophe (asteroid, climate surge, deadly pandemic, etc.) Or combination of some of the options.
