It’s not comparable. It’s not as constant for one, your tv wasn’t in your pocket and allowed during school. It’s also not as personal/isolated. You might have watched some shows on your own, but you also probably sat on the couch with friends and family and watched others. And for kids and parents it’s easier to monitor tv usage of a large screen that is in the same house. Rather than something they carry around on them everywhere that has access to content that is much less regulated than tv programs. This is constant, dopamine inducing, readily accessible content that some people consume hours of throughout their day. From someone who grew up between the two eras and had a smartphone by 14, MTV slop and MySpace is nothing compared to today’s social media usage. It started as primarily entertainment and communication, it has now become some people’s lives.
