AI is like the mining and forestry industries: They were / are insanely profitable because the people who engaged in them had the money to bribe politicians so that they could externalize almost all their costs onto the populace. However, everyone still needed products made of steel and copper and wood, so we couldn't really just completely boycott those industries.
While we don't actually need AI the way we need steel and copper and wood, there are times when an AI helps me solve problems so much faster (hours instead of weeks, or never finding a solution at all) than if I was just searching the internet and reading old forum posts. I know that AI companies are getting subsidized by being able to use electricity and water at much cheaper rates than I pay at home. But I also just fucking need my computer to work so I can get on with my life, and AI quite often is the only thing that can solve my problem within any reasonable time period.
