This has already happened in the transportation sector.  About a decade ago, there was a big push for fully driverless 18-wheeler trucks. Technology will replace the drivers, they said! Everything will be fine, they said! Except…driving a truck is only part of a trucker’s job. There’s fuel, maintenance, loading and unloading, security, and journey management aka what happens when there’s a huge wreck on the highway that shut down Interstate 40 for several hours at a time and the driver needs to reroute (and not simply following GPS on a map that takes you on a narrow twisty road through a residential area, but finding safe routes where the truck literally fits). All of these things that are NOT driving need actual skilled and trained humans to do them. The end result of all that? After hearing for years that driving wasn’t a good career path, people quite rationally decided to not become truckers. Now, we don’t have self-driving trucks AND the trucker shortage is 20% higher than it was a decade ago.
