Facial recognition won't stop any crimes but it will no doubt lead to tons of false positives with lots of poor innocents being arrested because if the recognition systems are only 99.9% (999 out of 1000 or one false positive per thousand) accurate then that means the are 65,000 people in the UK (1-thousandth of the population) who could be falsely arrested for each crime. I just checked and the most accurate facial recognition systems are claimed to be 99.97% accurate in 'ideal conditions' but of course the police vans won't have the best cameras+the best systems or other ideal conditions like the person being right in front of the camera and standing still and looking into the camera. Under ideal conditions there could still be roughly 19500 UK citizens matching the face for each crime committed. Real accuracy might be closer to 95% accuracy meaning 1 in 20 people could falsely match. So if facial recognition doesn't work and isn't a deterrent then I have to assume the police and government are simply trying to scare people or get them being used to being tracked constantly.
