That’s what people seem to keep failing to understand. It doesn’t need to be “true” AGI in order to displace millions of jobs.
I know we’re mostly talking about things like code generation and such in this thread, but just look at how far video generation has come in the past couple years. We went from that silly Will Smith spaghetti video to videos that are now tricking a huge number of people, like the rabbits on a trampoline video. Every single person I know that saw that video thought it was real.
Also music generation has come quite a long ways, it has progressed enough to where people are debating whether certain bands on Spotify are AI or not, and the fact that they are even debating this shows how far it has come.
There was also that recent AI generated clothing ad that looks really damn good, the studio lighting looks mostly correct, all the weird anatomical issues that plagued earlier generated videos look far better, it looks pretty damn convincing, yet it took one person a few mins and a prompt to create. There was no need for a model, a camera crew, an audio recording crew, makeup artists, etc etc. It was literally just some dood typing into a box.
People are vastly underplaying what’s going on here, and it’s only natural. We saw the same thing back when cars displaced horses. People refuse to see it, and they’ll continue screaming “BUT IT’S NOT REAL AI!” as it continues to gobble up more jobs.
