I’ve felt the same way for the past year or so. I work for a large company that’s been laying people off and claiming it’s due to AI efficiency. In reality, not a single person’s job has been replaced by AI when they were laid off. I think there’s a hard limit on what LLMs can do and we’re already approaching diminishing returns on it. Maybe the 2022 breakthrough is indicative that other major breakthroughs are coming, but it seems like it could be 10 or 30 years from now. Funny enough, I think the evolution of computer graphics is a good parallel. It felt like we were just around the corner from photorealism for 30 years.
