My understanding is the very worst thing humans have done to the planet overall is introduce plastic. It's destroying the oceans, and it's in everything, including us. It isn't good for us, or anything on the planet. There are thousands of forever chemicals, and we couldn't begin to test them all individually on humans over decades to determine which ones are bad. Maybe ALL of them are bad. How do we get rid of every single manmade element that is harming the Earth and life on it? We don't have replacements for all fuels, most materials, etc. Now we're burning huge amounts of energy and who knows how many hundreds of billions or more dollars on AI, and we don't know if it's mostly a waste of money or will actually somehow become self-aware and a threat to us. At the very least, it seems to be a threat to people's jobs and has plenty of errors that might not be caught. It's making people in school even lazier, and less likely to be able to do anything without technological aids. How many kids can do mathematics in their heads, or at least entirely by hand? How many know geography, or history, or any number of other topics, without using the internet or some device? Not only do I not think the internet and AI are helping humans, but I also actually believe both are actively hurting humans, all in order for shareholders to make more money in the short-term. Perhaps it's actually costing companies money in the long-term, for lesser results. However, it's the new big thing, so everyone is jumping on it.
