Intelligence is made up of many smaller distinct functions, many of which traditional software can already simulate. It’s not one big thing that AI either has or doesn’t have. Consciousness as we know it is merely the sum of these functions working together (Perception, Attention, Memory, Language, Reasoning, Learning, Planning, Decision-Making, Emotion Processing, Creativity, Motor Control, Metacognition) New probabilistic models like LLMs enable automation of additional functions, most notably language. Because reasoning patterns are embedded in language, LLMs can simulate reasoning without full experiential grounding. This confuses people because they see reasoning as originating from consciousness. In reality it’s the other way around.
