Honestly, AI is just the most recent iteration of automation. Going back to the 1960s or earlier the SciFi trope was that all labour would be automated and people would live a life of leisure. The bit that gets skipped over a lot of how people afford that leisure without a job to earn income. Most post-scarcity fiction assumes that money ceases to be a thing and that everyone is just provided with everything they would need as society is successful enough that it doesn’t need to charge for goods. Something like a UBI is intended to be a bridging function until we reach a point of not needing money. Sadly, for the most part we are too greedy to do away with money for now. People need a way of keeping score to define how much better they are than others - the powerful tend to use money as the ultimate way to keep score. They won’t care that automation, using AI or any other method, is putting people out of work. Provided their profits are up this quarter, that’s all they care about.
